This reed is my all-time favorite. I've already bought three of these, and I'll keep buying them. The variety of noises they produce is ideal for getting elk to communicate and stop and look. It was getting late on the final day of the season, and the elk were just not coming out into the clearing. This very reed is 100% responsible for at least one elk harvest I took. Although I could hear them, I was unable to see them. It seemed as though everyone had been given the go-ahead to rush out for their nourishment after I chirped a few low, friendly cows on this reed. A legitimate bull was one of the first chargers; I currently have him in my freezer. He was rescued from the woods by this reed before it was too late to get a shot off at him. I'll never hunt an elk without having this reed on hand.

Excellent for novices like myself. The diaphragm calls have been difficult for me to get to sound right. This allowed me to create a realistic bugle on my first attempt. Great sounding, lightweight, and incredibly simple to use. The only drawback is that the reeds can stretch out with time if you use it frequently, but they are simple to replace.

All of these goods (aside from the DVD, of course) are in my elk hunting pack. I mostly employ the hoochie and the yellow mouth call. I use the tube and/or the blue/orange mouth call when I require a stronger sound. Additionally, using the blue mouthpiece that is attached to the extended bugle while watching the dvd might be quite beneficial. With these calls, we have attracted numerous bulls and cows each season.

After I mastered bugling the previous year, I wanted to study cow calling. After doing some research, this seemed like the best choice because I didn't want to mess with the mouth reed setup just yet. I can confirm that this call performed brilliantly during the rut here in the highlands of northern New Mexico. After watching a YouTube video, it took me approximately 10 seconds to figure out how to use. Since our cabin is located directly on the border of a forest, elk frequently pass by. With the bugle, I could bring them in up to approximately 100 yards, but with this call, I could only get them within 40 yards. While huddled around our campfire for two weekends, I made six elk calls. This year, I didn't have a permit, so I was just having fun and wowing my pals with my calling skills.

During this year's hunt, they appeared to be effective at bringing in a bull. When I tried to call him in closer, he fled, however, due to the same calls. Since there is only one instance, the performance statistics are not truly accurate. The bull continued to "speak" to me from behind the forest line for an additional five to ten minutes after it fled. He was definitely paying attention.

Although I haven't had the opportunity to use it in the field, home testing has gone well. They're not laughing at you; rather, they're giving a challenge. With my palm cupped as a sound chamber, it sounds quite authentic. I really appreciate the billow design, which allows you to pump out several cries swiftly like the real Chukar. Catch me if you can, I say!

These calls are effective. I've used several different types and brands of diaphragms, and these ones work just as well for me while being far less expensive than others. It took me some time to give them a try because the primos sonic dome diaphram calls had left me with a terrible taste in my mouth (no, not literally!). Although it offers some reed protection, the plate on these does not seem to make blowing them either simpler or more difficult for me. I always keep a few calls in my wallet since you never know when you might need to call an elk. Anything that might make a call last longer is fantastic in my book. Not to mention that the Carlton's are the greatest and most affordable diaphrams I've ever used. However, if you can purchase these at the price listed here on Amazon, you are saving money on some decent calls.Update 2/17/15: I just realized that these calls now cost roughly $20. They are not worth that much to me. They function and sound OK, but there are many calls that perform just as well at a fraction of the cost.

While elk hunting in Nevada last week, I utilized both of these calls. The elk cow cry was a complete success. With it, I brought in a large bull elk from about 150 yards away. He appeared to be quite interested. To account for the various noises that elk cows and calves produce, several settings are available for each call. I heartily endorse them!

The calls are a little bit stiff at first, but they grow flexible with time and use. I also enjoy that they appear to use much more durable latex than they did in a previous model that I had used. Time will tell if this is true or not, as well as whether they endure more use and can be worn for longer periods of time while hunting.
