Best Drum Sets in 2020

Gammon 5-Piece Junior Starter Drum Kit with Cymbals, Hardware, Sticks, & Throne - Black Review:

My boy’s 6th birthday was nearing. His Grandma put a video of him playing a kid’s school Drum Set on Facebook. Upon viewing it, my decision to get him a drum set for his birthday was instant. I looked through Amazon and found this 5-piece Gammon Set in metallic blue. It was perfect and the price was right. The drum set arrived in three days and I was amazed!

The set took a lot of time and effort to assemble. I’m unable to follow instructions and the parts and pictures were all I had to go on. It worked. I got it set up in two days of part-time tinkering. The set looked nice, appeared sturdy and sounded well. I’ll have to get someone who knows drums to fine-adjust the sounds.

The set appears well made and sturdy. Time will tell. When my boy saw it and started playing it (read: beating it), he was just ecstatic. "This is the best present ever," he exclaimed three times during the evening. The feeling of joy on his part was just overwhelming, and well worth the cost of the drums. Drum lessons are now in order. It was the most-appreciated gift I’ve ever given anyone. Trust me!

Mendini by Cecilio 13 inch 3-Piece Kids/Junior Drum Set with Throne, Cymbal, Pedal & Drumsticks, Metallic Blue, MJDS-1-BL Review:

I spent far more time than is warranted doing research on $70-$100ish kids drum sets and arrived on this purchase. I am happy and want to note a few things. Reading reviews of this drum kit there were a few issues / red flags that gave me pause. I made the purchase anyway and was pleasently surprised to see that Cecilio has evidently addressed some of the recurring issues. Don't know if every set but my assuaged concerns include:

-Pedal Squeaking
- There were several comments about a loud squeaking chain driven bass drum pedal. They appear to have corrected this by using a spring / tether system. No sqeaks now

- No Instructions Included
- I saw several comments that said the unit arrived with no instructions and you had to download a PDF from their site. There were instruction in my package and they were actually pretty good. Also the assembly is not that complicated. You build the base drum (shell, membrane, rims) the rest is pretty much done

- Cheap / Breaking Hardware
- This was not what I experience. Not exactly NASCAR quality alloy or anything but the hardware seemed pretty standard grade and I didn't have any issues tightning things down

Thats it. Promise I'm not getting paid by Cecilio but I thought if you were shopping and came across the same concerns it would be helpful to know, that in the case of the unit I received at least, that these issues have been addressed.

Mendini by Cecilio 16 inch 5-Piece Complete Kids / Junior Drum Set with Adjustable Throne, Cymbal, Pedal & Drumsticks, Metallic Blue, MJDS-5-BL Review:

The drums came in good condition and set up was very easy. I've read through all the reviews, and I feel like I should point out a few things that people said negatively about these drums. . .

1. They are not a "high end drum set," however, they are AWESOME for a kid! My 4 year old and 6 year old love them! The quality is much nicer than a "toy." This is a great starter drum set for kids.

2. I also read in some of the negative reviews that the instructions were difficult or non-existant. While the instructions were brief, the kit went together very easily. Once you start putting it together, you get the gist of how to do it all. The instructions do not say anything about tuning the drum set, but there are plenty of videos on YouTube to help you do that.

So, the only negatives are that they are not "High End" and that the assembly instructions were not that great. Both of those were very minor. The quality of this drum set is still excellent, and the assembly was still very easy. I would budget 90 minutes for assembly. It took me about 20-30 minutes just to unbox everything and lay it all out. After that, assembly was easy-peasy!

So far, my kids love them. If you are looking for an entry level drum set, BUY THESE!

Mendini by Cecilio 13 inch 3-Piece Kids/Junior Drum Set with Throne, Cymbal, Pedal & Drumsticks, Metallic Bright Red, MJDS-1-BR Review:

My husband and I bought this as a Christmas gift for our 3-year-old grandson. (Any difficulties my daughter presented as a teenager have now been more than avenged.*) We live in different states, so we had the drum kit shipped directly. Thus this review is based on reports from our daughter & SIL and video they provided.

My SIL said that it took about an hour to assemble, presented no challenges, and it wasn't even a particularly focused hour. The kit is not something Buddy Rich would get excited about (of course, in his current state, there's not a lot that's wowing him), but it's sturdy, attractive, appropriately sized, and a great start for a young drummer.

*We actually had the full support of said daughter & SIL--in fact, upon our request they picked it out & sent us the link. They seem quite happy with their choice.

Ashthorpe 5-Piece Complete Kid's Junior Drum Set with Genuine Brass Cymbals - Children's Advanced Beginner Kit with 16" Bass, Adjustable Throne, Cymbals, Hi-Hats, Pedals & Drumsticks - Blue Review:

Bought this for my 7 year olds birthday. Will definetly fot him for years to come. My 4.5 year old could also fit it comfortably. Will need a blanket for the kick drum but obviously not a big deal since most use them anyway. Great sound. Looks amazing, just like the picture! Defenetly worth buying!

Gammon Percussion Full Size Complete Adult 5 Piece Drum Set with Cymbals Stands Stool and Sticks, Black Review:

No nonsense:
1. It's complete, as advertised and not hard to set up.
2. The cymbals sound bad, especially the crash. But they do what they are supposed to do.
3. The bass drum pedal doesn't have great rebound/tension to it, but it's adjustable and useable.
4. The heads are crappy but do their job--for how long, we'l see.
5. The rims are cheap/light aluminum and the bass will go out-of-round pretty quickly. As long as you're not breaking down and setting up, this is probably irrelevant--just let it go.
6. The black laminate covering on one of my toms has an obvious seam that looks like it wants to peel up.
7. Get some nice hickory sticks--the ones that come it seem like some kind of softwood.
8. The conclusion on these observations should be that, at $250-$275, there's nothing not to like here!! A professional drummer friend of mine came over recently to do my re-setup and gave it the seal of approval. Nothing you can't learn on this set that won't transfer to something nicer if the need or desire arises!
