My 15-month-old golden retriever loves The Honest Kitchen Preference grain-free base mix. I enjoy adding my own, homemade, human-grade protein to the mix and being able to modify the protein while knowing she is getting all she needs. The mix is simple to use. Many manufactured dog foods contain horrifying "meat," at best. I create a day's worth of base mix in 24 oz wide mouth mason jars, and my dog weights 60 pounds. 1 and 2/3 cups of water and 1 and 1/8 cups of mix. I occasionally substitute homemade broth with water. I prepare the base mix the night before, then feed half of it in the morning and the other half in the evening. When I put the base mix in her bowl, I top it with the protein and any other add-ins. She licks the bowl clean since she adores this food. However, my dog does consume everything. Since it didn't have a nice consistency after only soaking for the recommended three minutes, I advise mixing it the night before and storing in the refrigerated. Although my dog still ate it and enjoyed it, I would like it be fully absorbed before she consumes it. It does resemble a science experiment gone awry somewhat. After finishing her breakfast, she is shown in the picture with the other half of her foundation mixture. I measure and store a day's worth of protein in mason jars as well. Anyone may feed the dog in this way since it only requires half of each jar in the morning and the remaining portion plus any additional ingredients at night. I prepare the meat in bulk, split it into parts for one day in the jars, then freeze the extra jars. My dog is flourishing on this food and has a gorgeous coat in addition to being thin, healthy, and content.

Despite my repeated attempts to encourage her, one of my three dogs lost interest in the beef treat and stopped eating it. They all, however, adore this turkey dish above all others. Turkey dinner is a winner. Personally, I like to add a little fish oil to their diet for the health of their skin and heart (I use the Grizzly brand). I find this to be more reasonably priced than the seafood Honest Kitchen variety.Here is how I like to prepare it now.
