If you want to have internet in your home, you need to have a modem. You can either rent one from your internet service provider or buy your own. If you decide to buy your own modem, make sure it is compatible with your ISP and the type of internet connection you have.

Do I need a modem if I have an Ethernet port?

If you have an Ethernet port, you do not need a modem. An Ethernet port is used to connect to a broadband router, which then provides an Internet connection.

I was looking for a cheap replacement after my dependable Motorola Arris SB6141 quietly died the other day after numerous years of service and chose the MB7220. One of the Comcast-supported modems is this one (the SB6141 is no longer supported).Whatever you may think of Comcast, I've had service problems with them for more than ten years and never once. The updates they made to their web tools that now allow users to register their own devices without having to endure the hassle of customer care calls impressed me even more. I installed, registered, and activated the new modem via the internet interface in under five minutes.The MB7220 tested out at 70Mbps down and 6Mbps up. That's not terrible at all considering that I believe I'm paying for a 50Mbps subscription.The bottom conclusion is that this one appears like a solid choice if you need to replace your Comcast cable modem. Because it has fewer channels than more expensive models, it won't be able to pull more than 300 Mbps, which is really not going to happen unless you pay for that kind of service. This one is a bargain at just over $50.

I placed an order for this as soon as it was available since I couldn't stand the Arris models' blaring lights. Thankfully, this item did not let me down. Although the lights are not as bright as the Arris type I had, they are still pretty bright. Actually, I went ahead and covered the lights with some LightDims Original Strength stickers to make them much darker.I just activated it on Comcast's website, waited for it to be provisioned, and everything worked with regard to the setup.I tested my speed before and after installing this modem, and I noticed no difference (55 Mbps down 5 Mbps up and 37ms ping). However, unless I'm mistaken, websites appear to load more quickly now than they did previously. I also visited 192.168.100.1 where I changed my login and password and reviewed all the device information (even though I had no clue what most of it meant).Overall, especially compared to the latest Arris devices, I highly suggest this cable modem.UPDATE (5/2016): I've had this modem for more than three months, and it's still in fine working order.UPDATE (7/2017): It has started crashing on me after 1 year and 6 months. A Twitch stream will crash if I watch it for more than six hours. It won't work until I repeatedly unplug it and then plug it back in.9/30/2017 UPDATE: A few weeks after my previous evaluation, it abruptly quit resetting itself. I have no idea why it did that initially, but it hasn't stopped working since. Since I have no idea what transpired, I revised the rating back to 4 stars. I did, however, email Motorola, but they never replied. Customer service seems to be terrible. The reason for the 4 star rating is the poor customer support paired with the sporadic resets that occurred for almost a month.(01/07/2018) UPDATE: I continue to experience connectivity issues when attempting to watch a Twitch stream. However, it only occurs when I watch Twitch. I'm not sure if Comcast is throttling Twitch, if there is a problem with Twitch, or if the problem is with my cable modem. I tried directly connecting the cable modem to the PC, but the issue persisted. I'm glad to know that the problem is not with my ASUS router. My internet connection, xfinity performance pro, has a 150 mbps down and 5 mbps up rating. I've been using the Arris SB6141 modem, which has 8 down-channels and 4 up-channels. It's a terrific modem, with no problems, but its maximum speed is 120 down-channels and 5 up-channels. I bought the Motorola SB7621, which has 24 channel down and 8 channel up, figuring why not receive the speed I'm paying for. With a latency of 19ms, internet speed is currently 180mb/s down and 6mb/s up. I'm glad I'm finally getting the speed I paid for. Yes, the upload speed didn't change much, but xfinity doesn't offer 8 channel up in my location, so that's why. This indicates that even though this modem supports 8 channel up, it only displays 4 active up channels when you log in. xfinity is to blame for this, not the modem. The download channels function well; all 24 channels are visible and operational. Yes, I could have bought a 16 x 4 modem to have the same speeds as now, however at the time of purchase, this modem cost less or the same as all the 16 x 4 modems. By purchasing this Motorola, I will be covered even if I later increase my internet speed. The fact that this modem uses the Broadcom chipset rather than the Intel puma is an additional plus.The modem is well-packaged and comes with clear instructions. It was easy to set up. I was not required to dial xfinity. After connecting only the modem to my PC, all I did was go to Motorola.com and that brought me the xfinity activation page. Then simply enter your xfinity login information and follow the on-screen instructions. Very simple, which I appreciated since I didn't want to spend time on the phone with Xfinity support.I hardly seldom write reviews, but I felt this tiny box merited one, and I hope this will be helpful to someone.

It lacks the problematic Intel Puma 6 chipset seen in many higher-end cable demos, making it a more dependable option than the company's CM700 variant.There might be a drawback for certain people, but it has nothing to do with the CM600. It should be remembered that ONLY the ISP can give ALL firmware updates when using the CM600 interface (in my case, Spectrum). Spectrum would benefit if the firmware were updated, however it is unclear if they will do so (when and if necessary).Furthermore, it has been clarified that Spectrum is unable to remotely troubleshoot problems with "non-standard" cable modems and routers. These are any devices that are not the normal complimentary cable modems and routers that Spectrum installs as part of their service. However, they can perform a reboot to make sure the CM600 is operating properly.Funny how I see this as more of a benefit! I enjoy that Spectrum is unable to change the settings on my modem or router because I am a certified network support specialist and am more than capable of doing so on my own.It's as simple to set up the Netgear CM600 cable modem as plugging it in and turning it on. Within seconds of connecting the Internet wire to the back, the CM600 was ready for use.The CM600 is a one-trick pony; it only functions as a cable modem. Internet data is transformed from cable data. Given the requirements and the high-quality parts, it performs its unique task exceptionally effectively. The CM600 is designed to extract a signal from a dubious or unreliable line. When other, less reliable modems fail, it will still be able to connect you to the Internet. I haven't experienced any sporadic cable dropouts since getting this modem. Keep in mind that it lacks an integrated wifi or wired network. A router of this kind must be purchased separately.A quick aside: Your home's WiFi universe's Grand Central Station is the router. For an 8x4 channel Docsis 3.0 cable modem, my SB6141 provided me with 259Mbps down and 35Mbps up on my previous plan of 400Mbps down and 35Mbps up. Therefore, having had an excellent product with the 6141, I opted to order another one since Arris purchased Motorola's modem cable section. The Arris SB8200 is the only Docsis 3.1 modem featuring two 2Gbps down Ethernet connections, making it the most future-proof modem available at the time this article was written. Even better, a refurbished model is available for half the cost!A Broadcom BCM3390 chipset, which is a much-needed upgrade over the SB6190's Intel Puma 6 chipset, is found within the Arris SB8200, along with 3GB of RAM, 128MB of Spansion S34ML01G200TFV00 NAND flash memory, and 16MB of Macronix MX25L12805D SPI NAND flash memory. The SB8200 has upstream bonding channels of up to 8 SCQAM and downstream bonding channels of up to 32 SCQAM or two OFDM (32x8 SCQAM and 2x2 OFDM). The resets then began, happening at night approximately every ten minutes! Every night, only between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., was it happening! I had additional technicians and supervisors out. After a month (and a lot of my time and speaking up), the problem was found to be a defective line amplifier that was generating noise and caused my upstream to spike into the high 50s, which leads to modem resets and t3/t4 faults. Now, although my neighbors were experiencing problems with some channels and sluggish internet, their modems WERE NOT RESETTING! And we knew my modem wasn't malfunctioning because it worked flawlessly for more than 12 hours each day and had no issues at all till night fell every day. The Quick Start manual included in the box made setting up the Xfiniity compliant modem incredibly simple. A word of caution for Comcast / Xfinity customers: choosing the option to text an activation code is a joke when going through the setup Wizard. The code is only good for 15 minutes but I didn't get the text until 30 minutes had passed. I would strongly recommend it for the price if you plan to use it via a direct connect or neighboring wifi on the 5.0 GHz frequency. If you require higher speeds over a greater distance, you could prefer one with a stronger antenna signal.
