Can drain cleaner make clog worse?

If you have a clog in your drain, you may be tempted to use drain cleaner to try to clear it. However, drain cleaner can actually make a clog worse. The chemicals in drain cleaner are caustic and can damage your pipes. They can also cause the clog to become more firmly lodged in the pipe. If you have a clog, it’s best to call a plumber to have it cleared.

Do chemical drain openers work?

There is no one definitive answer to this question. Chemical drain openers may work for some people in some situations, while they may not work for others. Ultimately, it may come down to a matter of trial and error to see if chemical drain openers are effective in any given instance.

Do liquid drain cleaners damage pipes?

Do plumbers hate Drano?

Drano is a product that is used to unclog drains. It is made of sodium hydroxide and aluminum. The aluminum reacts with the water to create hydrogen gas. This gas bubbles up and breaks through the clog. Drains can become clogged with grease, hair, soap scum, and other things. When this happens, plumbers will use a plunger to try and dislodge the clog. If that does not work, they will use a snake to try and clear the drain. If that does not work, they will use Drano.

Liquid-Plumr Hair Clog Eliminator, Liquid Drain Cleaner - 16 Ounces Review:

I love this drain cleaner! I shed a lot of hair, but I put off obtaining a hair trap for my new shower when I moved into a new apartment. Naturally, a couple of weeks later it was completely blocked. I would essentially take a half shower, half bath since it would drain, but very slowly. This was the cheapest item with good reviews, so I bought it to save money.I began pouring it down as soon as I grabbed it, but it took some time to go down (obviously). But as time went on, I could see that the cleaner was fading quicker, which made me quite happy. I followed the instructions and waited the recommended 15 minutes after pouring the last of the cleaner into the drain. That performed flawlessly!I'm very happy that the drain now functions so properly! Although it still appears rather disgusting, that is not the intended use of the product. It successfully completed its intended task. With this buy, I'm quite pleased.

Green Gobbler Bio-Flow Drain Strips - 24 Strips | Drain Cleaner & Deodorizer Drain Sticks Review:

These are fantastic products! I bought a house that had been abandoned for more than a year (estate issues). The drains in the kitchen were smelling awful, and I tried a variety of items and DIY treatments with varying degrees of success. Finally, these Green Gobbler Drain Sticks worked. Since the pipes bend before they reach the trap, it took some time and some painful lessons for me to realise that I needed to install one in each sink (a double sink), but now that I've fixed my "user error," the smell is finally gone. I'm really happy.

ComStar 024924305003 Pure Lye Bead Drain Opener, 1 lb, White Review:

My bathroom sink has been obstinate for what seems like ages. It finally gave up and clogged 100% a few months ago. I did not drain at all. I tried using a super-cheap technique and what I already had at home—baking soda and vinegar—but it didn't work. After doing some research on Amazon, I decided to purchase a plumbers auger, or "snake," for the drain. That did affect the drain since it made it possible for it to empty the water that had been collecting in the sink for a few days at that point. But that didn't make my problem go away. I was still unable to use the sink more than a trickle for fear that it would overflow. Before I gave up and hired a plumber, I tried this product one last time. Even though I adhered to the instructions to the letter, nothing seemed to have changed. After the required wait period, the hot water I poured down the drain backed up again! And to make matters worse, it was emitting a kind of chemical "smoke" into the air! I was left with roughly a half of a bottle because that didn't work. I renounce! I'm making a plumbing call. A few months later, I still haven't called the plumber. I was brushing my teeth in the shower every day due to my amazing procrastination abilities and a work schedule that didn't coincide with any plumbers! I made the decision to make the call on the most recent Presidents Day, but I decided to use the remaining Pure Lye first since I had already paid for the entire bottle and still had half of it. I again followed the instructions exactly, but this time I simply poured the remaining bottle down the drain. Oh my goodness! Baby, back off! I'm not sure if the extra amount used this time or the fact that I used this product previously and the drain remained completely dry for months made the difference. Or perhaps a mix of those factors was involved. Whatever it was, it was successful this time! The chemical "smoke" returned as soon as the hot water went down the drain, but this time I was prepared with a plastic bowl, a drain cover, and an open bathroom window. The drain underneath the sink was making a lot of noise. I closed the doors under the sink because it seemed like it may explode, and it made a gurgling, rumbling sound. This noise was LOUD! After a little while, foam began to develop from beneath the bowl, so I filled the sink with more water. My sink drained out of the blue with a whoosh-like sucking sound in the background. It's been so long since I last brushed my teeth in the sink that I forgot what it felt like. Since this was the only item that worked for me, I have since ordered another bottle to keep on hand for future clogs.

Liquid Plumber Clog Remover, Professional, 80 oz Review:

Nothing is more wonderful than the huge air gurgle that occurs when a drain that has been blocked for THREE YEARS is unclogged. In fact, three years. Perhaps you're wondering why it took you three years. For the simple reason that we had never used a commercial liquid plumber gel. At least ten alternative items, snaking the line, etc., have all been attempted. Every fix made the sink clean enough for the kids to easily brush their teeth. It was forbidden to wash hands in that sink, and we had to leave if we heard our youngest playing because otherwise water would be dripping into the floor. I was feeling so frustrated as the sink became blocked.I am overjoyed that I ordered this. I poured around four cups and waited. Although it claims 15 minutes, it was definitely an hour since I became sidetracked. In any case, I followed up by running hot water and used my sink plunger. The foul material that emerged was shocking. sluggish, thick brown water. Even the question of its composition is off limits to me. I used the plunger for about five minutes, running hot water around every 30 seconds. Next, wa la. The water gushed loudly and then began to fall. Without a backup, the water running in the picture had been running for three full minutes. It was unheard of before (since we bought the house).Just in case there was anything else, I added the remainder of the bottle. I wish I had given this a go initially!

Drano Max Gel, Clog Remover, 80 oz Review:

I just purchased this item yesterday. My bathroom sink drain was running slowly, so after my aunt informed me of its existence, I did some research and read reviews for both this brand and the brand greengobbler. I'm glad I bought this one instead of greengobbler because the negative reviews made me hesitant to buy it because I live in an apartment and didn't want to deal with the product clogging my sink drain. In light of this, I decided to purchase drano and utilized it right away. I poured the drano into my bathroom's sink and bathtub and allowed it to sit for 30 minutes before flushing it out with extremely hot water. I then went to bed because I had made the decision to administer the treatment after everyone had gone to bed and nobody would be using the restroom. Which was an excellent decision because the bathroom sink and shower are amazing when it has had a night to sit. The sluggish drain issue in the bathroom sink is no longer an issue. The shower was fine—we weren't experiencing a drain issue—but I still wanted to administer the treatment just to be safe. Now, the shower is just as wonderful as it was when we first moved in.

Green Gobbler Ultimate Main Drain Opener + Drain Cleaner + Hair Clog Remover - 64 oz (Main Lines, Sinks, Tubs, Toilets, Showers, Kitchen Sinks) Review:

Pour a bottle of this into the toilet, ideally on the ground floor, and flush once if your main line contains a mixture of human waste, grease, paper, hair, and other materials. rinse it out after letting it sit for five hours.SURPRIZE! No more tripe backing into your drains, no more sewar gas, no more or. In the bottle, it appears to be harmless. However, if you let it loose on a main line, you can remove everything that is bothering you without any harm. It does not remove roots, but you can use a Copper Sulfate solution first and let it handle the problem before using this substance to clean all the debris and obstructions clogging your pipes. My particular problem is with "small pipe size" pipes that "blend with neighbor." Amazing how quickly this product resolved my issues. Since every scenario is unique, I guess it won't work for everyone, but my 80-year-old house is free of the smells, backups, and gunk that were tormenting my toilets. Class A!

Liquid Clog Remover By Green Gobbler - Drain, Toilet Clog Remover, DISSOLVE Hair & Grease From Clogged Toilets, Sinks And Drains - Drain Cleaner, Works Within Minutes - 1 Gallon Review:

This item is really fantastic! I've had issues with my main drain for more than five years. When I inquire about what I can do, the response I receive is that they can install a camera for $250 and check to see if they might need to dig up my floors and replace the line—a "solution" I'm not willing to consider. I looked up the price of a camera online and came upon the Green Gobbler enzyme supplement. I applied it to the washer drain and to both bathrooms. While I was at work, I left it to sit in the drain all day. I couldn't believe how much wash came out when I turned on the warm water in each bathroom when I arrived home, filled the washer, and let them all drain simultaneously. My eyes were fixed on the clean out valve. It was simply incredible! To make sure they are fresh and clean, I'm going to get another gallon to keep on hand and use once a week for about a month. The price is incredibly low when compared to the $165.00 it would cost to call the plumber every few months to utilize the drain auger. I was considering spending $500 on a commercial auger that I would use on an as-needed basis. Now I won't need that. Thanks a lot!

DISSOLVE Liquid Hair & Grease Clog Remover | Drain Opener | Drain cleaner | Toilet Clog Remover, 31 oz Review:

I have a toilet where it's completely unpredictable whether or not the #2 will flush. Despite repeated reminders to use the other restroom, the children would only remember to do so a few times before returning to clogging the toilet. These kids weren't wasting any toilet paper, so we checked how much they were using for their #2s.Then Christmas came, and it literally took three hours of plunging and snaking to the point where the entire porcelain bowl was left with all the marks. I had to drain it and use Barkeepers Friend to clean up the marks after we finally got it to go down because it looked so horrendous I couldn't stand to look at it. I so conclude that something must be there. Since the long-haired ladies use that bathroom the most, we did catch one kid flinging hair that got lodged in the shower drain there; perhaps that was it, or a hot wheel vehicle or something. If it was a wad of hair or a q-tip, surely some chemical would dissolve it, but of course all the draino things say no toilets...so I looked for a chemical plunger for the toilet and came across this and figured $12 was worth a try to avoid Roto Rooter. One day, I knew I was going to have to spend the $100 for the rotorooter when whatever it was finally became stronger than our plunging ability.I made the decision to hold off on using it right away in order to avoid the inevitable next youngster backing it up in the wrong toilet. And that was last night. I plunged (because it ought to have been quite decent after all that snaking just two weeks ago, right?) but all I managed to accomplish was get the water to very slowly drain while it did not flush. Because I wanted this Green Gobbler to be as pure as possible, I flushed again, got nothing, then plunged a lot more till I got that water all the way down to just out of the trap. Because all the other types of drains are supposed to be followed by hot water, I decide to microwave 4 cups of water until it is boiling before adding it to the Gobbler, thinking that could assist.I let it lie for 4 hours even though the instructions said to wait 2 hours or until the water was at normal levels. Nothing had happened, but since I had plunged it so deeply, I didn't think it really mattered since those 4 cups of water hadn't actually risen to the typical level. I added an additional 4 cups of boiling water, which is more than usual. When I observed no movement, I crossed my fingers and flushed. All the way to the top, it backed up. Argh! I believed I had been duped. When I picked up the plunger and sighed, I was prepared to stay there for another hour or two as usual. But lo and behold, on the second plunge, everything sucked away! YAY!Now that it's all gone, I'm going back to get another bottle just in case, but it definitely did something! And I didn't have to dive for another two hours! I'm hoping that cleared everything up, but I'm buying another one to prepare for a gigantic hairball or whatever was down there.
