These clippers are exactly what they claim to be! I shaved to the skin below the huge matte without using a guide. I worked slowly but managed to remove everything. They easily and smoothly glide over unmauled hair! These made me quite pleased, and I heartily suggest them. Being cord-free is advantageous. One of my cats, CK (the chubby one), has a long undercoat and a thick outside coat. When hair begins to grow long, it mattes quite rapidly (Like a big turtle shell on her back). I have a tiny Terrier/Maltesian mix with an odd mix of a finer top coat and a woolly undercoat that resembles sheep. When cutting hair when it is longer, you must be careful to remove all of the hair from the clippers; otherwise, the cut won't be as effective as you may think when the fine hairs accumulate. So long as you remember to do it, it generally works. When cutting long hair, it is advisable to start at the halfway point and work your way down to the shorter length.
