I had an old Chemex carafe, and used that. Now I grind coffee, put the grounds in a large mason jar, add water, screw on one of these lids and put it in the fridge for 6 to 24 hours. Then I remove some grounds at the top with a spoon, pour the coffee through a paper filter, and then pour the finished coffee into another mason jar and top off with one of these great plastic lids. Back in the fridge, where the coffee will keep for days if necessary. Heat a cup in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes, as needed. Not bitter at all, and convenient. No more broken carafes! Mason jars are tough.

I have a sizable collection of Mason jars that I purchased as part of a canning set, but I hardly ever use them for what they were made for. Since it's simple to gauge how much water I'm drinking (1 quart per jar) and they can be put in the fridge and dishwasher, they are typically used as reusable "water bottles." In addition, they work well for holding leftover soup, protein drinks, and any other liquids that you don't want to put in a Tupperware container. But after time, the metal lids and rings rust, and I've had to throw out the majority of them. Since they are required to create a hermetic seal when you boil the jars, I'd rather preserve them for actual canning. Well, I simply happened to come across this particular type of plastic lids and chose to give them a try. I'm delighted to report that they perform admirably. You simply twist them on and off like you would any other jar lid to put them on. Although the instructions state that they might not be totally leak resistant, I tested them by shaking the jars vigorously while completely upside down (since, as I previously stated, they're wonderful for protein shakes) and not a single drop leaked out. Maybe once in a while you'll be unlucky and get a lid that doesn't entirely seal, but I'd say they're pretty much airtight. Additionally, I only have to wash them by hand with hot water and soap to get them clean. These must be fantastic for families with kids. Different snacks or drinks can be identified by their corresponding colour lids!
