These are wonderful; they are crispy, tender, and of terrific texture. A brief blanch in some acidic, salty water is what I advise. I add roughly 2 cups of water, 1 teaspoon each of salt and lemon juice, bring to a boil, and then add these for 1 1/2 minutes. Use cold water to rinse. This liven them up, imparts a fresher flavor, and eliminates the faint canned flavor these have. I've tried other brands, and they definitely tasted canned.

I've now placed two orders for this item. The water chestnuts are excellent, and the price is far lower than at my supermarket shop. The product should generally last between one and two years after its expiration date, which was more than enough time for me. There are a few little dents in the cans, but nothing major that would hinder stacking or impair the contents.I deducted one rating since I received bamboo shoots this time around rather than water chestnuts. I didn't return them because I adore bamboo shoots and it would be a pain, but this means I'll have twice as much bamboo shoots and would need to get more water chestnuts, which is a minor inconvenience.As long as the costs remain low, I'll keep ordering these. I'll update this post if I encounter any additional problems or additions for subsequent purchases.

These chestnuts were very tasty, wow. I didn't know what to anticipate, but every New Year's I cook a special meal with Japanese sweet potatoes and chestnuts. I used to buy chestnuts in syrup at the Asian markets, but since I've made a significant effort to clean up my diet, I preferred to have organic chestnuts with a small amount of maple syrup added. So I decided to test these. They were so good that I almost ate the entire thing while preparing! It's a natural, healthy product, and I'll be repurchasing it soon to use as a treat for snacks. I ought to have placed a few orders. Although it doesn't have the most appealing appearance, it tastes fantastic. The fresh ones you steam and peel yourself, though, can't be better. Eating them with my grandparents in Japan brings back nice memories.

Five of these chestnut boxes are on my order. When you're in need of a snack, they're fantastic. As part of their Christmas gifts or stocking stuffers, we gave a bag to a number of folks, and they all loved it.When you unzip some of the bags, the interiors are a little moist. In essence, the chestnuts are wet. It's nice that you're not completely dry but also not sweating. Receiving them moldy is mentioned in other reviews. This hasn't occurred to us despite carrying tens of bags. If, however, you won't finish the bag in a week, I advise pouring out a few chestnuts into your hand rather than reaching inside. When I opened the one opened bag that we hadn't eaten in a week, I discovered that the five chestnuts inside were rotting. Most likely as a result of someone reaching inside the bag with unclean, germ-filled hands to get some.Pouring them out instead of touching them with your hands is highly advised.

BUT these are the best when it comes to finding a delicious roasted chestnut to snack on straight from the bag. My northern family used to send raw chestnuts down to our house for the holidays when I was a child. Dad showed me how to make a slit in the shell, bake the clams, and then carefully peel the clams' shells off (torture). I enjoyed the flavor and scent. I've used the Gefen and Galil brands from Amazon. The Galil is clearly superior since it is moister, fresher, and tastes better. I occasionally empty the bag onto a paper towel to help it absorb some of the extra moisture that has accumulated on the chestnuts' exteriors (they are not slimy or greasy, as some readers have commented). All of the roasted and peeled chestnuts taste as good as they look, despite their unappealing appearance. And I don't miss the time-consuming preparation I had to undertake in the past to eat them—cutting, cooking, and peeling.
