I folded out the shovel and the term that springs to mind is rigid. Excellent size and spade. The pickaxe portion easily cut through a 6-inch rock. It is blunt rather than particularly sharp. The sawtooth component doesn't appear to have any sharp edges, however when you start cutting a root, this coating is removed, revealing sharper points. Although I wouldn't advise doing it again with any instrument, the shovel was tough enough to place the pick under and pry toward the spade side to break the root. Excellent fit in nearly all pockets of your survival bag.

While most other entrenching tools require you to be down on one knee to use them, this one only requires a slight bending over—you are not required to be on your knees. You won't have to stoop over as much if you get the extension bars to lengthen the length. (It will, however, add some weight.)The parts fit together perfectly and will withstand use of the tool.A twist lock can hold the pick and the shovel head in place. I don't really have many issues with the tool itself. It works; I've already used it to cut down trees, and you hardly even notice that it has been used.More than anything, the extra extension component is a hassle. excessive weight and very easy to unscrew while in use. It's ok though because you can just throw it away and insert the end cap right into the handle.The carriers are my biggest gripe and the cause of the loss of a star. It is identified in the advertisement as MOLLE. They obviously don't understand how MOLLE functions because that isn't MOLLE, therefore All that is required is velcro to link the straps together. This means that while you can thread one side through MOLLE loops, good luck with the other side because it will be in constant contact with the velcro. I tried inserting a medium between them so that I could thread and then remove that medium, and then the velcro would adhere, but the straps are also a touch too wide, so good luck trying to insert the second strap after you've inserted the medium because it's simply too broad. I could definitely attach it if I worked on it for a few hours with all the equipment at my disposal, but that would contradict the purpose of MOLLE; I should just sew it on. So in my opinion, that is not MOLLE capable.TL;DR:Strong tool. For optimal results, use the tube without the extension. Because the carriers lack MOLLE capability, they are terrible (even though advertised as MOLLE).

I have both this and the VERY comparable Glock E-tool in my possession. The SOG appears to be built of a slightly lighter metal yet offers some design enhancements overall. The saw extension is simpler to operate than the glock because the lower portion of the handle is more ergonomically shaped to fit the hand. The saw has a blade with sharp teeth like a "bowsaw," whereas the blade on my Glock tool is more like a "bone" saw blade. The glosk saw is thicker and more durable, and it might even double as a screwdriver in an emergency. However, I believe this saw to be much more aggressive and quick when cutting wood. I'm tempted to buy more saw blades so I can have a spare and carry each type with each shovel. I have used the saw to cut down an obtrusive branch in a friend's yard (using it on the shovel as a polesaw), and it worked fine on the 3 inch diameter hardwood sawing while standing on top of a metal clothesline pole position (they are the same size where the mount into the handle). (As any action would have done. I'd had a few beers) It has also worked great for trenching out some bamboo roots about 6 inches deep in clay soil and planting vegetables on Virginia topsoil (shale). This tool is VERY lightweight considering its size, making it perfect for circumstances where you need a good shovel and occasionally a saw while walking. The telescopic handle is a significant plus, and it is far simpler to use, lighter, and more durable than most GI-style folding shovels you will ever see. It weighs about a third less than a GI and folds up to a same footprint.I keep one of this and the glock tool in my camping pack and one in my hunting kit as I own both of them. I also have a set of heavier, more durable commando shovels from the Chinese army. I keep those, an axe, and a bowsaw in my cars.I just realized I had around $200 worth of folding shovels, so of course I'm going to suggest getting this one! But have a look at the source.

An excellent option for an ultralight hiking trowel is the Deuce(R) Ultralight Backpacking Potty Trowel (Size #1). It is as light as or LIGHTER than the currently available, significantly more expensive titanium trowels. Due of its thinness, it penetrates dirt that is only moderately hard very well. Digging with the handle side down undoubtedly lets it to penetrate easier into hard/compact dirt, and its design gives it the toughness to do the job (given you use it appropriately and according to the instructions).In contrast to a real trowel with a complete, ergonomic handle, this won't be as pleasant. That is not its intended use. Compared to a stick or trekking pole, it is MUCH simpler to use and just as effective as any of the half a dozen "backpacking" or lightweight trowels I've used over the years. Its advantages include having a large color selection (if you care about it; I don't), being lighter and cheaper than its rivals while performing equally well.What am I not fond of? It won't be ergonomic with this ultra-thin metal design, I suppose. It is mildly painful to press firmly on the handle or, worse, on the pointed tip when digging with it upside down. It isn't particularly uncomfortable, though, and the thin edges manage to cut through dense dirt and small to medium-sized roots remarkably well. Naturally, if at all possible, you should strive to locate a location with reasonably loose soil and few roots because those conditions make it much simpler to dig with any trowel, but especially these minimalist ones.What do I cherish? It completely vanishes in my pack. I keep mine in a 5L sea-to-summit ultralight dry bag with a roll of toilet paper. Because the curved shape "spoons" around the toilet roll and vanishes, you can't even tell it's there. Although the metal is thin, I don't worry about it wearing through the dry bag because the edges aren't particularly sharp. It's fantastic. When you don't need it, it's out of your sight and out of mind. It's there when you do.Nothing more to add, I'm afraid. This is, in my opinion, the greatest minimalist trowel on the market right now when value, performance, weight, and aesthetics are all taken into account. This is the one to acquire as long as you are aware that a minimalist trowel will always have certain ergonomic tradeoffs (and don't expect it to accomplish much other than dig a proper cat-hole for yourself to relieve yourself, or maybe move hot coals around a small fire)!

The pivot pint will help avoid failure at that connection by having an epoxied steel insert there. The square channel through the handle, which is made of steel reinforced aluminum, might also be regarded to be similar. Compared to an aluminum threaded sleeve, the steel outer shaft sleeve is sufficiently lightweight and will have fewer issues. Keep the all-steel head and scoop as well. All in all, such modifications might reduce the weight of this unit by about a pound.I'll eventually accomplish this on my own and get a new weight. Unless you intend to use the adjustments to pull stones off the foot of a misfortunate lion or something, the changes won't make the system less reliable.

It's a decent folding shovel for the price, therefore I gave it four stars. You can use it for simple tasks like digging a latrine on soft ground or collecting roots from medicinal plants. But I wouldn't try to dig through hard, rocky dirt or put too much weight on it. You could also want to use a file to make it sharper. It is utterly boring right out of the box. It isn't too heavy to carry and is fairly light in weight. That is always positive.

I read several reviews on this specific cat hole shovel where people criticized the product's durability and build quality. I went ahead and bought it, and I just used it to set out from Pine Springs on an overnight trip in the Guadalupe Mountains. To get to Hunter's Peak, we hiked to Pine Top first. For how light it is, the little shovel performed really effectively. I initially believed that its bulk would make it difficult to handle. Despite being 6'3" tall and having a substantial build, I had no trouble using this instrument for its intended purpose. It had no trouble piercing the topsoil. As soon as I came across a rock, I carefully scraped the area to locate the edging and then gently pry up the small pebbles to remove them and create a larger hole. With this instrument, you won't be removing a boulder or digging a grave. The durability and small weight amazed me; these qualities were crucial for me on the route. You won't be let down by this item, in my opinion. Unlike a larger plastic shovel you might find in camping stores, this one is quite compact and takes up very little space. The tool's curve made it easy to reach and fit nicely around my extra water bottle. It also includes a little biner so that, if necessary, you can fasten it to your bag or belt loop. Due to its small size and light weight, it may be overlooked while using the restroom on the path. Simply keep it nearby or attached to something so you won't forget it.
