These resemble the Nebraska-made Peterson Vice Grips that I continue to look for at estate sales in both appearance and functionality. I now despise cheap imitation instruments that hurt me and other people. I did discover some vice grips at Horrible Freight that seem similar in every way to the Irwin vice grips, proving that tooling was transferred to another China plant when Irwin moved manufacturing there.

I adore using and owning my tools since I am a tool guy. Since I know they will last, I also like to have and use ones like that. I own a couple off-brand pairs of locking pliers with a vice grip, but none of them come close to the Vice Grips name brand. This is a sizable, attractive set that functions admirably to keep larger parts together.This pair is quite huge. About 3-1/2" wide marks the Top/Bottom of the C-clamp section. When closed, the C-clamp measures 5-1/4" from top to bottom. When the mouth is opened, it can clamp down on objects up to 4" across. When I need to have a nice, solid grip on 1x2 pieces of steel or other materials, I utilize this pair. The swivel mechanism on the gripping tips works well to increase grip when in use by lining up the angle of whatever you are holding.I was concerned that Irwin might mess with the Vise Grip name when they acquired it, but that hasn't happened; these are just as durable and dependable as my Vise-Grips from the earlier Vise-Grip brand. The addition of the Irwin logo is about the only alteration.When I weld pretty close to where they are clamping, these may become so hot that they really start to turn a little blue. When you hold them, it is instantly clear that they are made of a very thick metal that is quite strong and secure. These are by far the greatest of my other items, including Craftsman.These are sturdy, dependable, and do last a lifetime, earning 5 stars. My oldest set has been in use for over 30 years and is still as trustworthy as the newest.

fantastic clamps Because I can't permanently attach a table-top power tool (small), I purchased two of them to assist hold it in place. Additionally, I use this to keep pieces of wood that are nailed to the table while I cut a piece off it. I initially laid down two layers of a non-skid carpet material for the table-top tiny tool to prevent slipping. This ensures that the clamps hold firmly and that the table-top tool won't move when cutting. The clamps are sturdy and secure without moving. They are a multi-use clamp that I am quite happy with. These clamps were much less expensive than the "blue brand" auto-adjust option while still having great wide faces for surface contact, so I bought them. The screw functions perfectly, however it does detract slightly from its performance due to the manual adjustment. However, the green handle sleeve is primarily to blame for the "Easy to use" criterion being lost. I was initially concerned that these clamps would need to be pushed open because they didn't have the lever-action release mechanism, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it is really concealed under the bulb-shaped sleeve. But every time I squeeze it, that sleeve feels like it's going to fall off. I'd like to keep it there to preserve my fingers, but I could eventually throw it away due to the inconvenience.Since I've only had them for a few days and haven't had a chance to test them out yet, I can't speak to their durability, but thus far they appear fine. The metal doesn't feel "quality," but it also doesn't feel disposable or inexpensive. They appear to be a fantastic low-cost alternative to the fancier automatic face clamps so far, and I am looking forward to using them.Update: I discovered that I could clamp 3.75 inches with these, using two 2x4s and one 1x4.
