I was seeking for a more affordable source for our chickens because we had been purchasing dried mealworms from a well-known hardware store at exorbitant costs. Picky Neb mealworms were far less costly, so I gambled on them and was pleasantly rewarded. There are very few broken worms among these big ones. To prevent our chickens from harming themselves while attempting to get at them, we have to mix them in with scratch grain and feed. They wail and crowd the door to their run when they see me approaching with the tiny bucket I use. Additionally, they have started laying bigger eggs since we started feeding them these worms. The eggs have increased in size from medium to large, which I didn't think was conceivable. I'm not certain, but it seems to have started occuring a week or so after we started giving them these higher-quality worms. They aren't always accessible, and that is the only issue I have.

In all honesty, I only buy mealworms because they are cheap because I don't see many differences amongst the options. Mealworms have been a recent addition to my backyard feeders, and they successfully draw bluebirds. I was paying around $10 per 1 lb. bag at the big box retailer, which rapidly became pricey. Now, almost all of the bird species that frequent my feeders prioritize mealworms above seed—even some slothful robins that opt to eat dried worms instead of the live ones they regularly consume from the ground. These come attractively wrapped in a patterned bag with a zip closure. Although I can't personally attest to the claim of being "appetizing," the birds seem to agree. In order to further reduce the price per pound, I'm thinking of switching to the 11# size. Just be aware that it is a costly habit to include mealworms in your garden meals. You will need to keep them safe or bring the feeders inside at night, which is a headache because they are also tempting to squirrels, possums, and raccoons.

Since dried mealworms weigh virtually little, this box gives you a lot of volume. The best case scenario is when they are entire and not fragmented. We don't have chickens, but we do have plenty of quail, wild pigeon, and other wild birds, so during the colder months we like to sprinkle these on and around their seed block. Along with cornmeal, peanuts, and raisins, I also bake suet cakes for the woodpeckers and cactus wrens and sprinkle those in during the mixing process (adding more on top before flattening). We must be pretty well liked by the woodpeckers, I suppose! lol We find it hilarious to see them "stack" in a line up our tallest palms while waiting for their time to swoop in and indulge at the suet hanger (like so many airplanes on the tarmac). The mealworms appear to be disappearing from the cakes rather quickly, so they must really love them!

Wow, that's a sh*tload of mealworms, my wife remarked upon their arrival this morning, I believe summarizing the situation.The sheer number of dried mealworms that make up 5 pounds impresses us, and the fact that most of them are still intact despite being fragile suggests that the handling, packing, and processing of them were done with care.I think it's a "positive" because the scent isn't that horrible considering that it's basically a big bag of dead grubs.They are being fed to wild birds, who don't eat them with as much fervor as they do live mealworms, but live mealworms are more expensive. Our resident shama thrushes debated whether to eat them or the live bird we had been giving them, but ultimately decided to do so. In order to prevent the chicks from dehydrating and dying from being fed extremely dry worms, we took the messy step of hydrating them as they are also giving them to the chicks. This entails preparing a little amount of worm soup and letting the worms ingest it. Even while they still lack the solidity of live ones, this should at least keep the chicks hydrated when the adults feed them these.I'll keep you updated as necessary, but thus far, the birds and I are both quite impressed with these.Update 9/15/19: I've given this product five stars instead of four because it's a fantastic product and to slightly update the review.At least nine chicks from one pair of parents have been produced this season thanks to our feeding of the shama thrush family, and we continue to communicate with five of them every day. Live mealworms are only used for specific training purposes, such hand-training, when a high-value treat is more beneficial. This product makes up the majority of what we provide.At this point, I always cook them. Using an induction cooker, I simply boil a few cups of these, simmer them for five to ten minutes, let them cool for a bit, then leave them in a strainer to drain dry, before putting them in a plastic container that I freeze. This is helpful because the cooked ones, even when refrigerated, can go bad rather soon; by freezing them after cooking and draining them, they can be handled simply and thawed rapidly.I defrost them by placing a handful of the frozen, cooked worms in a low glass tumbler with a substantial base, filling the glass to about an inch or so above the worms, and stirring. The worms defrost rapidly because if you offer them to birds frozen, they would break apart like they do when they are dry and very little will be consumed. Additionally, it may not be healthy for birds to consume that much ice. Although I've discovered that they would rather I leave it floating in the tumbler than set it out for them, They kept going to the tumbler for "iced worm soup" as I was doing that, which I believe they took as a serving suggestion rather as a technique to thaw them out. Even if I've placed some nearby, they fight over who gets to eat the mealworms that are floating in the cold. They'll then sit on the worm-free tumbler on our stair landing and look at me until I make more, one of them making pitiful little "foooo" noises, after it runs out.Because live mealworms are expensive and difficult to raise, many fledging chicks have relied on this product as their main source of nutrition. Of course, by raising the yard's capacity for shamas, we absolve ourselves of the obligation to continue providing for the increased population that has now arisen. All of them have names, and we are aware of their personalities. The primary five are Rocket, Birdlet, Bird, Chickie, and Cheepy.Funny how a bag of worms may result in a lifestyle focused on birds.

Every one of my birds, including my dove, loves this treat. For the budgies we had, my mom would frequently purchase Oats and Groats, and the birds loved it.Until I had a bird that was ALWAYS clamoring for millet, I had forgotten about this little gem! My birds eat largely pellets, and I don't like to give them treats made of seed very frequently (bad experiences with sick birds who ate seeds only). Considering that this particular bird won't try fruits or vegetables no matter how often I present them to him, I was trying to come up with something that might be a little healthier than millet. However, I just so happened to notice Oats and Groats online and thought about how much older birds cherished them. I quickly purchased a small can to try with my existing flock of birds. After a brief delay, all of my birds immediately devoured these. Now, my finicky bird can occasionally get by on oats and groats instead of millet. If you soak the mealworms in warm water for about 45 minutes, bluebirds will consume them. They will also be eaten by squirrels and every other bird. For your feeder post, get a squirrel deflector! The other birds will return once they discover these mealworms. Deadbeat Cowbirds and thieving Bluejays will soon consume everything, so you will need to chase them away. It will probably be required to install a second or third feeder to ensure that your bluebirds get a chance to eat. It is advisable to get live mealworms for young birds that are still in the nest because they require a lot more moisture. Only the food that their parents provide them can provide the newborn birds with moisture. Additionally, you need a birdbath and water supply for the adults, who dehydrate after flying all day to take care of their young and like bathing. Every day, I scatter a half cup of soaked worms three times. The cheapest way to feed the birds is in this manner. Later, I might add to this.

The goal of this stick reward is to hang it in the cage. Most of them would be near the bottom of the cage, I know my parrot well enough to realize that. I placed my order unsure of how difficult it would be to cut them into bite-sized pieces. Fortunately, it wasn't too difficult for me because I have hand arthritis. The parts are ideal for inserting in a fiber ball toy that he can forage to get at the pieces, which requires a little work but is well worth it. I periodically add a few to his feed bowl as well. I need to maintain his weight because he is getting older—40 years old. As he attempts to remove the parts from his ball and when being selective with his food, this treat seems to keep him focused and from becoming bored. I love that I can subscribe to receive these on a monthly basis through Subscribe and Save. Although it is intended for a smaller bird, once it has been split into pieces, the bird enjoys holding the pieces once he has removed them from his play. Obviously, it shouldn't be used as a daily feed or as a maintenance food, but it works well when combined with AviGain and AviGreen. I also strongly suggest these two items for an older bird.
