After determining I didn't want to try the traditional rectal thermometer procedure for a baby, I purchased this thermometer about two years ago. Because it is very simple and convenient for adults to use on themselves, we have used this thermometer a lot as a family. This past week, my three-year-old and eight-month-old both contracted the flu. Underarm temperatures were insufficient, and I dislike taking rectal temperatures (as do my children). I didn't read the reviews before placing this impulsive order (unlike me, but I am exhausted, cut me some slack.) This device is amazing. I got it so I could check on my preemie's temperature. This is definitely an improvement over my previous earphone, which had few LEDs and other features. I like that it can read from the ear and forehead and that it has a backlight, a fever indicator, a silent mode, and those features. No more annoying beeping for the sick child. It can also be used to test the temperatures of other things, which I thought was an interesting feature but I didn't pay attention to when I bought it. Since I'm poking it in kids' ears and on contagious surfaces, I'm not sure if I'll actually measure anything else with it. The ear reader liners were the only item missing, but because I still have some from my old one, it didn't bother me too much. I needed some assistance in adjusting the bath water's temperature. I looked at a few other infant thermometer models on Amazon before purchasing this duckie. It costs a little bit more than other models, but it appears to be well manufactured and has extra features like a timer and a clock. How to switch the temperature units between degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit is well explained in the provided tutorial. I appreciate not having to shake or slap the thermometer in order for it to start working as soon as it reaches the water. I also appreciate that this thermometer only beeps when the water temperature is outside of the specified range rather than continuously. The layout is adorable and secure. I adore the idea. This kind of thermometer is now used in my doctor's office. A reading is obtained by briefly touching the head. With this thermometer, I have trouble getting a reading around one-third of the time. I only ever receive error messages and a loud buzzer. It finally gets through. But it doesn't move as quickly as it ought to. It occasionally requires four or five attempts. In fact, I was torn between giving it three or four stars. Given that I think a reading is accurate once you receive one, I've given it four stars. I have worn both of the temples. My head's temperature will be the same on both sides four out of five times. If this is a budget purchase, my advise is to go ahead and make the purchase. It may just take a few tries for it to register. But be prepared to exercise some patience. I often use an Exergen temporal thermometer, but it can be challenging to get an accurate reading on a fussy 6-month-old baby because you have to slowly scan the forehead. That is why I adore this forehead and ear thermometer. I only need to hold the device an inch away from her forehead to activate the forehead mode without touching her. The reading is generally consistent even if she occurs to wiggle (I tried it 3 times in a row). Because you actually have to insert it into your ear, I believe the ear mode provides a more accurate reading than the forehead mode (but is still a little harder to use on a baby). My three-year-old had no trouble using the ear mode. The readings were not entirely constant in the ear and forehead modes, I did note. They differed by as much as half a degree. It is not a deal-breaker in my perspective. Checking for a fever is the sole purpose of using a thermometer. Even though there isn't much of a difference between 101.9 and 101.4, a fever still exists. So this might not be the thermometer for you if you're seeking for one that is always 100 percent accurate. But as a mother of two energetic children, the convenience is enormous and can tell me whether or not my child has a fever. And the price is fair!
