But since I'm a chemist and I value empirical proof, I had to do some study on this. I've come to the conclusion that although these necklaces appear to operate, they truly don't. I'll explain.The most logical explanation I've come across is that Baltic amber contains succinic acid, which is released when it comes into touch with skin. The analgesic (painkilling) effect of the ingested succinic acid reduces teething pain and discomfort. This seems very plausible until you look into the science supporting the assertion. Succinic acid, commonly known as succinite, is present in Baltic amber in small amounts (between 3 and 8 percent), however this is about where the truth of the statement ends. The polymer framework of Baltic amber contains the majority of the succinic acid in the amber. In other words, it is restrained and unable to be released without causing damage to the building. When you take into account that just a very little portion of the amber (only the surface) comes into contact with the skin, unbound succinic acid—which is present—amounts to a minuscule fraction of that 3-8%. That is a strike. At room temperature, succinic acid that has not been bonded is a solid. It is not melting from the warmth of a person's skin because it has a melting point of 363 °F. I'll be happy to change my mind if more investigation reveals that something else is the reason why these function. Regardless of whether it functions or not, the necklace is lovely and well-made, therefore I gave it four stars. Although there are some safety procedures that must be followed, I don't believe this necklace is dangerous. It shouldn't be worn till the child is older because it shouldn't be chewed and is too lengthy if the child can put it in his or her mouth.
