I hardly ever spend the time reviewing something, but in this instance I felt obligated to. I am not a diesel technician; I am a computer guy. I connected my OBD2 reader when I noticed a check engine light on my 2005 6.0L PowerStroke Excursion at only 87k miles because I consider myself to be quite clever and literate. The car is entirely stock.To read the FICM voltage, I don't have a ScanGauge2 or another tuner. Only basic PIDs like battery voltage and other values are read by my OBD2 reader. Fortunately, I came upon this power board from Dorman. I keep discovering more Dorman items that are excellent OEM substitutes (suspension parts mostly). The Internet persuaded me that purchasing this was a fantastic deal and inexpensive insurance. For $4, I placed my order and had it shipped overnight (thanks Amazon Prime).This is really easy to replace. A pair of pliers, an 8mm wrench, a 10mm wrench, a Torx T10, a Torx T20, and some common sense are required. Check to see if the truck is cold. Both batteries should be disconnected at the negative terminal. To release the pressure, remove the cap from the coolant reservoir (diesels refer to it as a degas bottle?! ). The two little lines to the coolant (degas) reservoir should be disconnected. To reach the FICM, remove the two bolts holding it in place and pull it toward the driver's side fender. The FICM has two 10mm front bolts and two 8mm rear bolts. There are three clips to the wiring harness on the bottom after removing them. The FICM unit must be disconnected from each one (each clip has two tabs, one on each side). With the T20, pry open the little access window, and the T10, remove the four screws. Turn the shell over and eliminate the additional T20 screws keeping it together. The power board and covers can then be taken off and replaced in the reverse order. Taking the FICM out of the truck is the most difficult element of this process. The harness connectors were difficult for me to use. When reinstalling it, make sure they are seated and snap into place.The moment I opened the FICM, I could smell burning nylon and plastic. To me, this was clear evidence that the power board had given up. According to computer years, it is about 10 years old, making it quite old. There were some capacitors that didn't look good either. Even though I watched a YouTube video first, I spent around an hour on this task. All codes were removed after reinstall, and the truck now functions flawlessly. Spend no more than $500 on a refurbished FICM. Self-help is possible here!
