My RV camper has two parallel-wired batteries. This was put in place by me to stop parasitic loads from draining the camper's batteries while it was idle between excursions. As a three-way switch, it can be set to operate solely on one battery, either battery, or none at all. I had to look up a wiring diagram online because it didn't come with instructions. After that, installing it wasn't too difficult. One small removable panel is located on each side of the switch to provide wire access to connector posts, but removing the panel exposes a sizable gap in the switch's sides. I made holes in the panels and put the cables through them for aesthetic reasons and to lessen exposure of the inside to weather, etc.

This is what I bought for my little fishing boat. I have some little toggle switches that occasionally get accidentally bumped. When the boat isn't in use, the battery can drain if it's not noticed. When the boat is kept indoors, there is also a fire safety hazard. For my trailer, I needed a battery cutoff switch that could be reached from the outside of the battery box. I preferred a model without a removable key and one that would be sturdy. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it either. This one was perfect. I had to adjust the side of my battery box where I had initially planned to attach it because it was a little bigger than I anticipated. It sticks out several inches from the inside of the box and would have run over my battery. This switch is nice. It is made of beautiful, sturdy metal rather than plastic. When you turn it on, there is a distinct "click." My batteries no longer experience parasitic drain while in storage, and I can now switch the power off even if my battery box is locked. The switch's threaded shank is flat on two sides, allowing you to use a wrench on it. I made the decision to use a file to shape the aperture so that it matched the shank after slightly under-drilling the hole for it. The switch won't revolve in the opening when the nuts are tightened in this manner. To stop water from getting inside the box, I applied a dab of RTV silicone behind the outside plate. I've had this setup for a year and haven't experienced any switch or water in the box issues.

On my ancient IH tractor, the great disconnect switch is reasonably priced and does a great job. There is a "ghost battery drain" on the tractor that Case/IH experts have been looking for for five years. Dead battery if I leave the battery in place but don't operate the tractor for a week. Simple: after each use, I simply detached the negative connection. I carried a half-inch wrench around with me for five years, which caused the cable end and tightening bolt to wear out.I eventually got this switch nine months ago, and I put it in by myself in about 15 minutes (after really cleaning both posts and cable-ends and ensuring a good connection, with dielectric grease on everything). There have been none since. To start the engine, I simply hand-tighten the top wheel nut (not too tightly). When I store the tractor, I shut off the engine, turn the wheel nut loose by one turn, and (just because I'm OCD) turn the key to make sure there is no current.
