I started using automatic feeders about six months ago instead of hand feeding, and I currently use roughly six of these devices (all for different tanks). I think I can summarize the benefits and drawbacks of this product in this paragraph for your consideration.Pros: 1) This tool is incredibly easy to use and manage. I misplaced the owner's instructions a few months back, but to be honest, you only need three or four buttons to find out how to program this device. Additionally, the tiny plastic door on the amount regulator is very simple to change depending on how much food you want to give. My preference is to err on the side of caution and only increase the number of revolutions if I believe the fish require it.2) Consistency was a major factor in my decision to convert to automatic feeders. I am a sucker for overfeeding, and because I work primarily with nano tanks, I have experienced every issue that comes with eating too much. I committed all those mistakes and paid the price for each and every one of them, from algae to odorous water to fat fish to being enticed to eat more food just for fun. Now that I can go weeks without using the fish food, I have a baseline from which to modify the dosage as necessary. It also enables me to make diagnoses without having to consider the possibility of overfeeding as a contributing factor.3) Reliability – I have used this device without a hitch for months. I primarily intended to use this as a vacation assistant, but I also needed to make sure it would function properly when I was monitoring it. Indeed, after a few months, I never experienced a technical issue with this device. Also, the option of "dissolving" food for travelers appeared to be less expensive, but the reviews I read about those products scared me off with the idea of adding so many extra chemicals to the water (btw, when you are away for several weeks you probably aren't going to have someone change the water).Cons: (yes I still would give this product 5 stars) (yes I still would give this product 5 stars)1) Various food types - a second feeder is needed. I need two of these to ensure that the corys and gouramis in my tank receive the food they require. I have flake food for the gouramis, but sinking pellets for the corys. I've considered combining the two into one gadget, but I earlier discovered that the consistency would be severely compromised if I tried this.2) Food of varying sizes may become stuck. So, while it doesn't really matter for flakes of food, you might want to switch to flakes if you have bettas and their pellets are different sizes. The food may not be able to exit if the door is left too closed because large particles may become lodged, but if the door is left open too wide, too much food may spill out. In conclusion, choose the flake food and err on the side of not dropping a lot of food until the pellets are dependably the same size.3) Avoid placing an air stone or HOB filter over a moisture source. I discovered this the hard way after returning from a week-long vacation. The water splashes stopped when I placed the feeder above an airstone, which is where I also placed the container. All the food had gone bad after a week and was caked within the feeder (the fish were fasting for quite a few days). I completely agree with Rachel O'leary when she said that you shouldn't use fish feeders at all if your fish room is too damp or moist. The food was kept completely dry for weeks and weeks by keeping the feeder away from my HOB filter and air stone.4) Forgetting to replenish or alter the food. Although having this issue is a nice thing, I occasionally forget to refill or modify the programming based on my current fish stock. For instance, I might overfeed if I remove a large number of fish from a tank without adjusting the amount of food that is dropped. Although it is obvious that the operator made a mistake, it is simple to overlook a routine.These are my opinions regarding this feeder. Despite all the drawbacks, I would still give it a 5 star rating and would keep purchasing only this particular brand because it functions for me. Please note that while I have not used any other brands, I did read all the reviews before choosing this particular product because I believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
